Salobral Lagoon.

The Laguna del Conde or Salobral Nature Reserve is part of the wetland complex in the southern province of Córdoba, along with the permanent lagoons of Zóñar, Rincón, and Amarga, and the seasonal ones of Tíscar and Jarales. All of them have been protected for their importance in the wintering and nesting of waterbirds. It is located about 6 km east of the town of Luque, near the provincial border with Jaén.

The Laguna del Conde or Salobral Nature Reserve is the largest in the province of Córdoba and one of the largest continental wetlands in Andalusia, although its depth rarely exceeds one meter. This seasonal lagoon has a mixed origin, with contributions from rainfall, runoff (Quejigal and Carrascón streams), and underground sources. Its waters show large fluctuations in salinity, depending on the origin of its main inputs.

Surrounded by a landscape of olive groves, vineyards, and cereal fields, typical of the fertile countryside of Córdoba, this lagoon has a lakeside vegetation composed of reeds, rushes, sedges, and bulrushes.

Due to the gentle slope of the terrain and the shallow depth of the wetland, numerous wading birds use the lagoon as a passage and breeding area. The most significant bird species include the black-winged stilt, Eurasian golden plover, stone-curlew, and marsh harrier, among many other species.

To this richness, the existence of a very varied and interesting fauna must be added, among which are common frogs, natterjack toads, marbled newts, viperine snakes, painted frogs, genets, weasels, rabbits, hares, polecats, and European pond turtles, among others.
